At Marble Mountain Kennels, we specialize in Labrador Retriever breeding in California, raising healthy, well-loved puppies for families across the West Coast. If you’ve ever wondered what dog breeding is really like behind the scenes, here’s a lighthearted look at a typical day at our kennel.

Staff Person #1: The males are showing an interest in Vail. No spotting yet, though.
Pete: Did we get a natural with Vail last time?
Staff Person #1: No, but she had a litter of 12 with an A.I. (That’s artificial insemination, not artificial intelligence.)
Staff Person #2: I tried to breed her naturally last time, but she gets grouchy.
Staff Person #1: She has an attitude and postures herself against the males more than other dams.
Pete: But Stryker’s interested?
Staff Person #2: Oh yes—and he can usually get the job done, no problem.
Staff Person #1: He’s the king of romance.
Pete: Bring up Vail, separate her from the others, and give me blood updates. I want her to breed naturally this time, if possible.

And so begins an average day at Marble Mountain Kennels.

With talk of dams and studs, timing, and careful planning, Labrador Retriever breeding can be both highly technical… and unintentionally hilarious.

It’s only occasionally that I’m reminded this is not normal breakfast conversation for most households.

In fact, the kids and I have been publicly mortified more than once when Pete takes a phone call in a restaurant or grocery store:

“Sounds great. Bring the bitch over this evening. We’ll keep her here a few days and see if Stryker is interested.”

Let’s just say we’ve gotten a few curious looks from innocent bystanders.

And once or twice, I’ve felt the need to casually announce, “We raise Labrador Retrievers.” to absolutely no one in particular.

‍What Goes Into Responsible Labrador Retriever Breeding

Pete is the resident expert when it comes to breeding. (Let’s be honest—he’s the expert on everything at MMK. I mostly stick to writing, website upkeep, and helping with training… and occasionally raising an eyebrow.)

But responsible Labrador Retriever breeding isn’t just awkwardly overheard conversations—it’s a carefully planned, highly intentional process.

There are pedigrees to study (no inbreeding on our watch), cycles to track, and daily observations to log.

Timing is everything.

Too early? No success.
Too late? Missed opportunity.
Just right? Puppies. 🐶

And then there are the boys…

Intact males who suddenly discover that today is the most important day of their lives.

‍

How We Know When a Labrador Retriever Is Ready to Breed

While every dog is a little different, there are clear signs we watch for:

  • Interest from males
  • Playful behavior
  • Bright red discharge (not ready)
  • Light red discharge (still not ready)
  • Straw-colored discharge (getting close)
  • Flagging (ready for breeding)

Romance at a dog kennel may not look like candlelight and violins—but it does involve careful timing, experience, and a whole lot of observation.

Why Families Choose Marble Mountain Kennels

At Marble Mountain Kennels, we raise purpose-bred American Labrador Retrievers for:

  • Service work (autism, PTSD)
  • Scent detection
  • Search and rescue
  • Therapy work
  • Upland and waterfowl hunting
  • Exceptional family companionship

Our dogs are known for their unique balance of a calm “off switch” and an eager, intelligent “on switch.”

All of our dams and studs are:

  • OFA tested (hips, elbows, eyes)
  • DNA tested
  • Carefully selected from proven working lines

We are proud of our Partner Breeder program, where our mama dogs live in loving guardian homes—not kennels—ensuring they are raised as part of a family.
