This is another of our most frequently asked questions. Is there a Lab coloration that determines how smart a dog will be? The short answer is no. A dog’s intelligence is based on breeding, not hair color.
At Marble Mountain Kennels, we have been breeding and training Labrador Retrievers for over 28 years. Over that time, one of the most common questions we receive is about Labrador Retriever colors—yellow, fox red, black, and chocolate—and whether color affects temperament, trainability, or purpose.
The truth is that all four recognized Labrador colors come from the same breed standard, and each can make an exceptional family companion, working dog, hunting partner, or service prospect when bred responsibly. (And, just as a note, "fox red" is actually a dark yellow.)
At MMK, our focus has always been on temperament, health, structure, and trainability first, with color being a natural expression of genetics rather than a defining trait.

Black Labs are the most historically common working Labrador. They are often associated with field work, hunting, and service roles due to their strong focus and versatility.
Yellow Labs range from nearly white to deep fox red. They are widely recognized as family companions and service dogs, known for their friendly and adaptable nature.
Chocolate Labs are beloved for their rich coat color and affectionate personalities. While color does not determine temperament, careful breeding ensures they perform just as reliably in working and companion roles.
Labrador color is determined by a combination of genetic factors inherited from both parents. Responsible breeding focuses on pairing dogs based on health, temperament, and structure—not color alone.
At Marble Mountain Kennels, we carefully plan each litter to maintain the highest standards of health, stability, and working ability.
If you are searching for Labrador Retriever puppies in California or the West Coast, Marble Mountain Kennels offers planned litters, training programs, and family-raised Labradors with strong working and companion foundations.
