One of the traits we value most at Marble Mountain Kennels is what we call a good on/off switch. Simply put, an on/off switch is a dog's ability to adjust its energy level to match the situation. When it's time to work, train, hunt, hike, swim, or play fetch, the dog is eager, focused, and enthusiastic. But when the activity is over, the dog can "switch off," relax, and settle comfortably in the home. In our experience, this balance is one of the most important traits for creating a Labrador that is enjoyable to live with every day.

Many people assume they must choose between a calm family dog and an active sporting dog, but the best Labradors are often both. A dog with a strong on/off switch may spend the morning retrieving birds in a field, accompanying a family on a long hike, or participating in service dog training, then come home and quietly rest at your feet. These dogs are not constantly demanding attention or looking for their next activity. Instead, they learn when it is time to work and when it is time to relax.

Because so many of our puppies go on to become family companions, hunting partners, service dogs, and therapy dogs, we intentionally select breeding dogs that demonstrate this valuable trait. While every puppy is unique, we have found that a strong on/off switch often contributes to easier training, better household manners, and a more enjoyable relationship between dog and owner. For many families, it is one of the qualities that transforms a good dog into a truly exceptional companion.
